No, really, do NOT feed the bears.

Sorry – I have to rant – I received an email forwarded to me from my Dad and I’m not upset at his email, but at the amazingly stupid behaviour exemplified in this email.

Here is the quote and the images in the email:

There was a feature on this guy in one of the Anchorage Newspapers. He is
retired and has been FEEDING bears
in his cottage’s backyard for over 25 years. The bears just come and
hang out and he believes them to be his friends .
WOW, good luck with that !

What a git. Really. I don’t find this kind of stuff amazing, instead I look at it as incredibly selfish and with an utter disregard towards the bears. Bears are not stupid animals, and nuisance bears (like the ones in Jasper, Banff and all over the interior of BC) are at greater risk of being killed by humans – whether its crossing roads to get to an ‘easy’ food source or by breaking into a home that’s not ‘bear friendly’ and beinh hunted down as a disturbance. If we really respect nature and all it’s glory, perhaps it should be shown respect, which the last time I checked did not include straddling a full grown bear and grinning like an idiot.

Perhaps this is Darwinism in the making. For the bears, I hope so.

About Sarah

You know, I am a marketing geek, but now so much more. I'm a wife to a fantastic husband, a mother to our stillborn son, Foster, the wrangler of three cats, two dogs and a passel of chickens. This blog started out as a general interest thing, and it still is, but expect a lot about babies and still birth and other nuggets I find interesting.
